Shion no.6 toi812/13/2023 The development of the romance itself is likewise incredibly important to how Rat and Shion matter in terms of representation. They eventually reach a place of promising to always be honest with each other, and their relationship grows deeper after this. The amount the two argue over their different ideals also makes them equal in their ability to speak their minds, neither afraid to be heard. The two have obvious differences in their personalities, yet neither is more traditionally masculine or feminine.įurthermore, both of them pursue each other romantically, falling in love with each other rather than one finally giving into the other's feelings in a show of succumbing. However, Rat is the one who knows how to dance and fills his home with books, while Shion makes plans to save the entirety of society using his skills in ecology. Shion cares deeply for the people around him, can be naive and is quicker to get flustered. Rat is hardened by the world, good with a gun and adept at surviving a harsh society. Rat and Shion do not fall into any specified gender roles in their relationship, while still being allowed differing personalities. The fact that Shion and Nezumi are the stars of an action-packed dystopia both survive the ordeal - even with some dicey moments - makes No. Not only do Rat and Shion fall in love, but both also make it out alive, escaping the dreaded ' bury your gays' trope where one or both of the LGBTQ characters die by the end of the show. While all positive LGBTQ representation is naturally welcome, the significance of LGBTQ characters casually existing and falling in love in an action/adventure story cannot be overstated in an industry plagued with harmful stereotypes. Rat or Shion could have been replaced by a female character and the plot would have remained just the same, and their sexuality is not the focus of the anime because there is a whole different story to tell. No.6 can be found and streamed on Amazon Prime Video.A number of factors lead to why Rat and Shion are so important, the first being how their relationship is developed and portrayed. Their relationship grows gradually and without any fuss over their gender their compatibility is the most important factor. Showing a strong and unique relationship between two male characters, No.6 is still, at the end of the day, just a brilliant story of perseverance and freedom. For this reason, this manga often wrongly falls under the wrong label by fans. Instead, the author intends for No.6 to be known as a sci-fi post-apocalyptic universe, much like The Last of Us. On a more negative note, Asano has specified to not wish to call this story a BL (Boys’ Love). As per Nezumi’s words in the novel, their feelings will never falter, regardless of whether he names them or not. Despite their physical declarations of tenderness, no explicit word regarding their relationship was ever uttered, as they remained friends with a clear romantic subtext. Their soul-bond connection leads them to each other, solidifying their growing affection with two kisses throughout the story. Nezumi and Shion are nothing but teenagers in a complicated universe that attempted to pit the two contrasting social scales against one another, but neither boy seems to pay any mind to the societal structure of No.6.
